KAZA TFCA: 2011 treaty establishment and the 2022 KAZA Elephant Survey results

KAZA was established by treaty between Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe in 2011, linking national parks, game management areas, forest reserves and community land across the Okavango and Zambezi basins; a coordinated dry-season aerial survey flown August-October 2022 estimated about 227,900 elephants in the TFCA, with Botswana holding about 131,909, described as broadly stable relative to the 2016 IUCN African Elephant Status Report.
