The first Atlantic telegraph cable is completed

The cable ships completed the laying of the 1858 cable between Valentia Island in Kerry and Trinity Bay in Newfoundland, having met in mid-ocean and paid out in opposite directions. Test signals passed from 10 August; on 16 August the first official message was sent — the directors' announcement that Europe and America were united by telegraph — and a widely publicised exchange between Queen Victoria and President Buchanan followed. For a few weeks a message could cross the Atlantic in minutes rather than in the ten or eleven days a fast ship took.
