Train ferries begin crossing Lake Baikal

With the Circum-Baikal shore line unfinished, the icebreaking ferries Baikal and Angara begin carrying trains across the lake, a crossing of roughly 45 miles. For five years the longest railway on Earth has a hole in it that is filled by a ship — a reminder that a "completed" railway is a claim about continuity of service, not about continuity of rail.
