Cables and a power link are damaged in the Baltic Sea

The BCS East-West Interlink and the Finland–Germany C-Lion1 telecommunications cables were damaged on 17–18 November 2024, and on 25 December the Estlink 2 power cable and several telecommunications cables between Finland and Estonia were damaged. Finnish authorities boarded and detained the tanker Eagle S over the December incident, and later brought charges against senior crew members; the vessel was associated in reporting with the shadow fleet used to move sanctioned Russian oil. Investigations into the November incidents centred on another vessel and did not produce charges on the same basis. The mechanism in each case was an anchor dragged along the seabed — the ordinary accidental cause of cable damage, in circumstances that made accident hard to assume.
