The Berlin Marathon runs through the Brandenburg Gate

Three days before the formal reunification of Germany, the course crosses the line of the former border and passes through the Brandenburg Gate. The gate has framed the finish ever since. It is the clearest instance in this Journey of a course being a political statement rather than a piece of route planning.
