The first Boston Marathon

Fifteen runners start from Metcalf's Mill in Ashland and run about 24.5 miles (39.4 km) to the Irvington Oval near Copley Square. John J. McDermott of New York wins in 2:55:10. The race is organised by the Boston Athletic Association's John Graham, who had managed the American team in Athens the previous year and brought the idea back with him. It has been held every year since, which makes it the oldest annual marathon in the world.
