The Bridgewater Canal opens from Worsley into Manchester

James Brindley's canal for the Duke of Bridgewater carried coal from the Worsley mines directly into Manchester, crossing the Irwell on the Barton aqueduct and running underground into the workings themselves. The delivered price of coal in the city is generally reported to have roughly halved, and the demonstration set off three decades of canal promotion.
