Cavanaugh and colleagues report that the giant tube worm's trophosome is packed with sulphur-oxidising bacteria, explaining how an animal with no mouth and no gut feeds itself. Chemosynthesis stops being a hypothesis about vent communities and becomes a documented mechanism.
