A dispute over whether American officials crossing into East Berlin had to present documents to East German rather than Soviet personnel — a question about who was recognised as the authority in the city — escalated into a direct confrontation at Checkpoint Charlie, with tanks of both powers drawn up in sight of each other with live rounds. The withdrawal was arranged through back channels and executed as a matched sequence, one tank at a time, so that neither side appeared to retreat first. It is the only direct armoured confrontation between the two powers in the whole period.
