The first Chicago Marathon, as the Mayor Daley Marathon

More than 4,000 runners start a flat lakeside course, a very large field for the period. The race is named for Richard J. Daley, who had backed it and died in office the previous December; Michael Bilandic, his successor and a runner, sees it through with Park District support. Dan Cloeter wins in 2:17:52 and Dorothy Doolittle in 2:50:47.
