Georges Nagelmackers establishes at Liège the company that becomes the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits, after seeing Pullman's night trains in the United States in 1867–68. The company will own carriages and staff but no track, contracting with national railways to attach its stock to their trains — the arrangement that makes an international luxury service possible in a Europe of incompatible national railway administrations.
