Cort patents grooved rolling and puddling

Henry Cort patented rolling iron through grooved rolls and then a puddling process converting pig iron to wrought iron in a coal-fired reverberatory furnace in which the fuel never touches the metal. Together they removed charcoal from the second stage of ironmaking and multiplied output per worker. The origin of the puddling method is contested, including by a 2023 argument that it derived from Black metallurgists working in Jamaica.
