Donald A. Smith drives the final spike of the Canadian Pacific main line at Craigellachie in Eagle Pass, British Columbia, at a deliberately unceremonious gathering. He bends the first spike and pockets it; a replacement goes in cleanly. The line completes a promise made to British Columbia as its condition for entering Confederation, and it does so several years ahead of the contractual deadline — a speed bought partly by accepting the 4.4 to 4.5 per cent Big Hill over Kicking Horse Pass rather than waiting for a tunnel.
