The last Direct Orient Express leaves Paris for Istanbul

The final Paris–Istanbul working departs Gare de Lyon late on 19 May 1977, running a few minutes into 20 May. It is not the end of the name: a service called the Orient Express continues to Budapest and Bucharest. But it is the end of the through journey the train was invented for, killed by the jet and by cheap air fares rather than by any failure of the railway. Not a metre of track closed.
