Intelsat I (Early Bird) becomes the first commercial geostationary satellite

Launched in April 1965 and entering commercial service that summer, Early Bird provided the first continuous commercial telecommunications link across the Atlantic from geostationary orbit. Its capacity was tiny by any later standard — a few hundred telephone circuits or a single television channel, not both at once — but it established the product that would dominate commercial space revenue for the next half century: a fixed point in the sky that a ground antenna could be aimed at once and left alone.
