Caribbean elkhorn and staghorn corals listed as threatened in the United States

Acropora palmata and Acropora cervicornis become the first corals listed under the United States Endangered Species Act, after white-band disease removed most of both species across the Caribbean from about 1980. The listing is a marker of how complete the collapse was: these were the two species that had built the shallow Caribbean reef, in that zone, for thousands of years.
