Aerial surveys in March 2024 recorded widespread bleaching across the Great Barrier Reef, the fifth mass event in nine years after 2016, 2017, 2020 and 2022. Set against the six-year median return interval measured in 2018 and the decade a fast-growing assemblage needs to rebuild, a five-event sequence in nine summers describes a system in which the recovery interval has effectively been removed rather than shortened.
