The LIGO Scientific Collaboration and the Virgo Collaboration announced GW150914 publicly and published it in Physical Review Letters, five months after the event and after an extended internal validation including blind injection checks. The delay is part of the record: an unrepeatable one-off signal in a novel instrument required demonstrating that the collaboration could not have produced it accidentally or deliberately. The 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics went to Rainer Weiss, Barry Barish and Kip Thorne for the work that made the detection possible.
