Dahl links Malagasy to Ma'anyan of southeastern Borneo

Otto Christian Dahl's Malgache et Maanjan established, on shared sound correspondences and vocabulary, that the closest known relative of Malagasy is a Barito language of southeastern Borneo, some six thousand kilometres away across the Indian Ocean. The result demonstrated that Madagascar's founding population came from island Southeast Asia rather than from the African mainland a few hundred kilometres to the west — a conclusion reached from language before archaeology or genetics could reach it.
