Fleming observes lysis around a Penicillium colony

Returning to his laboratory at St Mary's Hospital, London, Alexander Fleming finds a discarded staphylococcus plate contaminated by a mould, with the bacterial colonies dissolved in a halo around it. He publishes the observation the following year. Nothing therapeutic follows for twelve years.
