Gompertz describes the exponential rise of adult mortality

Benjamin Gompertz presents to the Royal Society the observation that the force of mortality after early adulthood increases in approximately geometric progression with age. The formulation gives ageing a quantitative signature — a slope — and therefore gives any future claim to have slowed ageing something specific to demonstrate.
