Leonard Hayflick and Paul Moorhead report that normal human fibroblast strains stop dividing after a limited number of population doublings, overturning the belief that vertebrate cells in culture are intrinsically immortal. The arrested cells remain alive and metabolically active — the first description of what is now called cellular senescence.
