Zhu, Kirkland and colleagues reason from the transcriptional profile of senescent cells that their survival depends on specific anti-apoptotic pathways, and identify dasatinib and quercetin as agents that kill senescent cells preferentially. The paper creates a drug class defined by a mechanism rather than by a disease.
