The Liverpool and Manchester Railway opens

The first railway worked wholly by steam locomotives, carrying passengers and goods to a timetable on a double track between the cotton port and the cotton city. On the opening day the MP William Huskisson was struck by a locomotive at Parkside and died of his injuries, so the technology's promise and its danger reached the newspapers together.
