Lovejoy and Nobre argue in Science Advances that the Amazon dieback threshold lies at twenty to twenty-five per cent deforestation rather than the roughly forty per cent proposed two years earlier, on the grounds that fire, clearance and climate change interact rather than add. The revision is the most consequential number in the debate and it is a judgement about interaction terms, not a measurement.
