OSNAP moves the engine room out of the Labrador Sea

The first 21 months of OSNAP data, from August 2014 to April 2016, gave a mean overturning of 15.6 ± 0.8 Sv across OSNAP East and 2.1 ± 0.3 Sv across OSNAP West — a factor of roughly seven. Published in Science, the result contradicted the prevailing assumption that Labrador Sea convection dominates the strength and variability of subpolar overturning, and relocated most of the water-mass transformation to the Irminger and Iceland basins east of Greenland.
