Monier patents iron-reinforced cement

Joseph Monier, a French gardener, patents reinforced cement tubs and tanks - iron mesh embedded in cement mortar. It is not yet a structural system, but it is the first commercial expression of the idea that the tension a cementitious material cannot take can be handed to metal placed exactly where the tension occurs.
