A multibeam echosounder survey of the Mariana Trench records a deepest sounding of about 10,984 +/- 25 m. It is the deepest modern acoustic result - and it has never been confirmed by a direct pressure-gauge descent, which is the sharpest single illustration of how much the answer depends on the instrument.
