The Original Dixieland Jass Band — five white musicians from New Orleans — record "Livery Stable Blues" and "Dixieland Jass Band One-Step" for the Victor Talking Machine Company at its studio on West 38th Street in New York. Issued as Victor 18255, it is generally counted the first jazz record commercially released, and it made the music an international commodity within months. Black New Orleans musicians, who had been playing the idiom for a decade and more, were not recorded in it until several years later; the ordering is a fact about who owned the studios, not about who made the music.
