Warsaw Pact forces invade Czechoslovakia

Soviet, Polish, Hungarian, Bulgarian and East German forces entered Czechoslovakia overnight to end the reform programme of the Prague Spring. Romania refused to participate. The invasion is the only multilateral military operation the Warsaw Pact ever mounted, and it was directed at a member state; the doctrine subsequently articulated to justify it — that the socialist community had a right to intervene where socialism was threatened in one of its members — is the clearest statement of what the alliance actually was. The western powers protested and did not act, exactly as the Soviet Union had not acted over western responses in its own sphere.
