Lime clasts reinterpreted as hot mixing and self-healing

Seymour, Masic and colleagues publish in Science Advances an argument that the millimetre-scale lime clasts found throughout Roman concrete are not evidence of careless mixing but the product of hot mixing with quicklime, and that they give the material a self-healing capacity: water entering a crack dissolves calcium from a nearby clast and reprecipitates calcium carbonate across the crack. It reframes a two-thousand-year-old durability record as chemistry rather than as luck.
