Stony coral tissue loss disease first observed off Florida

A previously undescribed disease producing rapidly advancing tissue-loss lesions is first observed on reefs off Miami-Dade County. It spread along the Florida reef tract and, from around 2018, through much of the Caribbean, affecting more than twenty reef-building species with very high mortality in the susceptible ones. No causative agent has been definitively identified.
