The rural song form of eastern Cuba reaches the capital, carried west in part by soldiers of the Permanent Army, and there meets the clave of Havana rumba — the five-stroke asymmetric timeline that lets a whole ensemble lock without a conductor. The internal migration of a rural form to a capital with recording studios and a dance-hall economy is the same shape of movement that carried samba from Bahia to Rio and blues from the Delta to Chicago, and it happens in all three within about thirty years.
