The third global bleaching event

The longest and, to that date, most widespread global bleaching event, running across three consecutive northern summers and declared by NOAA during its course. It differed from 1998 and 2010 in duration rather than only in extent: reefs that bleached in one year were still under thermal stress in the next, so the recovery interval within the event was itself near zero.
