Construction of the Trans-Amazonian Highway begins

Brazil's military government announces and begins a federal highway across the southern Amazon, framed as a national integration and settlement project. Together with the other trunk roads of the period it establishes the pattern that dominates the following half-century: access first, clearance after. Most of the settlement schemes attached to it failed on soils that could not sustain the agriculture planned for them.
