Valerios Stais excavates the Tumulus of the Athenians

The Greek archaeologist Valerios Stais excavates the Soros at Marathon and confirms it as the burial mound of the Athenian dead of 490 BCE. The excavation falls five years before the first modern Olympic Games and in the middle of the European enthusiasm for Greek antiquity out of which the marathon race was invented.
