South African Railways introduces the luxury boat trains between the Witwatersrand and Cape Town, timed to connect with the mail steamers to Britain. The service exists because of a shipping schedule; the scenery is incidental. Blue steel carriages follow in 1937 and air-conditioned Metro-Cammell stock in 1939, and passengers begin calling it the blue train long before anybody renames it.
