The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express makes its inaugural run

A privately assembled train of restored 1920s Wagons-Lits carriages runs from London Victoria to Venice, five years after James Sherwood began buying withdrawn stock. It is a commercial reconstruction, running on ordinary paths over ordinary networks. Its success shows that the train can be rebuilt at will and the route cannot be built at all — the alignment through the Alps was already a century old.
