Roberta "Bobbi" Gibb runs the 1966 Boston Marathon without an entry, joining the field at Hopkinton and finishing in about 3:21:40. In 1967 Kathrine Switzer enters as K. V. Switzer, receives a bib and is physically confronted by an official during the race. Women are admitted officially in 1972, after the AAU changes its rules and the BAA opens registration. The interval matters: the barrier was regulatory, not physical, and it fell six years after it had been demonstrated to be nonsense.
