Lagos Blue Line

Lagos's first urban rail line, running from Marina on Lagos Island west along the Lagos–Badagry corridor to Mile 2, about 13 kilometres, with commercial passenger operations beginning in September 2023 after a construction period running back to 2009. It is a state project delivered by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, and it matters less as a piece of engineering than as evidence about delivery: a city of this size operated for decades with no rail at all, on a road network carrying informal minibus services, and the first line took roughly a decade and a half from ground-breaking to service. A second phase extends about 14 kilometres from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko with six further stations; as of mid-2026 the authority reported infrastructure completion targeted for the end of 2026 with passenger service in the first quarter of 2027, and cumulative ridership on phase 1 passing eight million. Those are the numbers that describe an urban system: a corridor at a time, over years, against a population that grows every year.
