Metrocable Line K, Medellín

The first aerial cable-car line built as scheduled urban public transport rather than as a tourist or mountain lift, opened by Metro de Medellín on 7 August 2004. Line K runs about 2.07 kilometres from Acevedo station on the metro's Line A up the eastern valley wall through Andalucía and Popular to Santo Domingo, integrated into the metro fare so that a rider transfers without paying again. The engineering choice follows directly from the terrain: the comunas it serves sit on slopes too steep and streets too narrow for a bus route, and residents had been walking or making long multi-leg journeys of up to two and a half hours to reach work in the valley floor. What the line changed was not speed for a whole city but reachability for specific neighbourhoods, which is why it is studied as a targeted intervention rather than as a network upgrade. Later lines followed, and the type has since been copied in La Paz, Rio de Janeiro, Caracas and elsewhere with markedly different results.
