List of World Heritage in Danger

A separate list, provided for in Article 11(4) of the Convention, of inscribed properties threatened by serious and specific dangers — armed conflict, large-scale public or private projects, urban development, tourism pressure, abandonment, natural disaster. It is designed as a mechanism for mobilising assistance and corrective action, not as a punishment, and inscription on it does not require the State Party's consent. In practice it is read politically: some States treat it as a call for help (Mali, Cambodia), others as a national humiliation to be resisted (Germany over Dresden, Italy over Venice, the UK over Liverpool). Danger listing is the usual, but not compulsory, precursor to deletion.
