UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization)
node · earth
The UN specialised agency whose General Conference adopted the 1972 World Heritage Convention and whose secretariat, the World Heritage Centre, services the World Heritage Committee. UNESCO does not itself inscribe or delete sites: it convenes, drafts, monitors and publishes, while the decision to inscribe or delete belongs to the intergovernmental Committee of States Parties. Its earlier convening role in the International Campaign to Save the Monuments of Nubia (launched by the Director-General in 1960) is the institutional ancestor of the Convention.
