Abbott World Marathon Majors

node

A commercial and sporting series, not a governing body. It was announced on 23 January 2006 by the directors of five races — Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York — and launched at the 110th Boston Marathon on 17 April 2006, with a points-based championship rather than a time-based one and a one-million-dollar purse split between the leading man and woman. Tokyo joined for the 2013 series, making six, and the six-race set is what the "six star" finisher medal counts. The series has since expanded: Sydney was elevated to the Majors on 4 November 2024 and ran its first race as a Major on 31 August 2025, and the Cape Town Marathon was confirmed as the eighth Major in June 2026 with a debut scheduled for 23 May 2027. Membership is decided by the series, not by World Athletics, which is why the phrase "the Majors" describes a commercial partnership rather than a sporting rank.

A node is not a place. Drawing it on a map would assert something about the world that no stored fact supports.
