British-born astronomer whose 1925 Radcliffe doctoral thesis, Stellar Atmospheres, applied Meghnad Saha's ionisation theory to stellar spectra and concluded that hydrogen and helium overwhelmingly dominate the composition of stars - a result that contradicted the prevailing view that stars resembled the Earth in composition. Henry Norris Russell, then the field's dominant figure, judged the conclusion impossible and she added a sentence calling the derived abundances "almost certainly not real". Russell published a consistent result by a different method in 1929 and acknowledged the agreement. The episode matters for this Journey because the entire account of stellar life depends on stars being made mostly of hydrogen: without that, nothing about fusion timescales or evolutionary tracks follows. Not a place.
