The co-founder and chief executive of DeepMind, which he started in London in 2010 and which Google acquired in 2014. He shared one half of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with John Jumper "for protein structure prediction". The organisation he built is responsible for three of the specific claims examined in this Journey and they do not all stand equally: AlphaGo, which was a genuine and decisively demonstrated result in a closed game; AlphaFold, which was validated blind and has been adopted as scientific infrastructure; and GNoME, whose materials-discovery claim was publicly contested within months by crystallographers. Holding all three under one name is the most economical way to make the Journey's central point, which is that the same institution can produce a demonstrated change and an over-claim in the same decade.
