French woman, born in Arles on 21 February 1875 and died there on 4 August 1997 at the age of 122 years and 164 days — the longest documented human life. Her case was investigated at unusual length by a team of demographers who cross-checked civil registers, census entries and family records; Robine and Allard published the validation in Science in 1998. In 2018 the Russian researchers Nikolay Zak and Valery Novoselov argued that the woman who died in 1997 was in fact her daughter Yvonne, who they proposed had assumed her mother's identity after the mother's death in 1934, plausibly for inheritance-tax reasons. French demographers responded with detailed rebuttals drawing on census household composition, photographic evidence and interview testimony, and the validation stands in the official record; the dispute is nonetheless a live one in print. Her longevity is one observation, and one observation supports no mechanism.
