Indian-American astrophysicist who, while still in his early twenties, combined special relativity with the quantum statistics of a degenerate electron gas to show that a cold star has a maximum possible mass. The result was published in the Astrophysical Journal in 1931 and was publicly and forcefully rejected by Arthur Eddington, whose opposition delayed its general acceptance for years. It is now the load-bearing constraint in stellar endings: everything about whether a star finishes as a white dwarf or collapses further follows from it. He shared the 1983 Nobel Prize in Physics for work on the structure and evolution of stars. Not a place.
