Trajan (Marcus Ulpius Traianus)
person · earth · Rome, Dacia, Mesopotamia; born in Hispania Baetica
The first emperor born in the provinces (Italica, in Baetica, southern Spain), under whom the empire reached its greatest territorial extent after the Dacian and Parthian wars. Both facts belong in this journey: a Spanish-born emperor is the citizenship mechanism working, and the immediate abandonment of the Mesopotamian conquests by his successor Hadrian is the empire discovering the limit of what its logistics could hold.
