The regina viarum, begun in 312 BCE by the censor Appius Claudius Caecus and eventually running from Rome to Brundisium (Brindisi) on the Adriatic - which is to say, to a port for Greece and the East. It is the template for what a Roman road is for: it lets an army reach a harbour quickly. Its earliest stretch predates the empire by three centuries, which is the point - the infrastructure of empire was built by a republic that did not know it was building an empire.
